Everything is a remix

Kirby Ferguson not only believes that the way modern DJs and producers ‘remix’ by copying, transforming and combining is legitimate, he says it is the root of all creativity and that the mission to be original is inane. In his series of four short films called “Everything is a remix” he argues against the idea of the heroic singular artist who strives to create something new. He claims that ideas develop organically and evolve through the interplay of ideas of many individuals. He ponders about the difference between plagiarism and innovation and in the fourth film comes to some startling conclusions. A must see!

‘Everything thing is a remix’ the TED talk

“Over protecting intellectual property is as harmful as under protecting it… Culture is impossible without a rich public domain. Nothing today, like nothing since we tamed fire, is genuinely new. Culture, like science and technology, grows by accretion, each new creator building on the works of those that came before. Overprotection stifles the very creative forces it is supposed to nurture.”  Judge Alex Kozinski during a copyright infringement law suite in the USA in 2003

Kutiman – Art or Plagiarism

Watch some Kutiman videos. Kutiman is based in Israel and came to fame by scouring youtube for solo performances (usually in bedrooms) of vocalist and musicians. He then combines them into ‘original’ (?) pieces of music. The question is …. is this being creative or is it plagiarism. Can he claim to be making art by cobbling together the amateur footage of unwitting session musicians – who never had any intention to be part of this process?

Another musical meme is the often performed jazz phrase that has become so cliched that it is just known as ‘the lick’ and has its own Facebook Page
