Using ‘coded’ language to persuade the electorate

In this great clip from “Scandal” Congresswoman Marcus (played by Lisa Kudrow) accuses her interviewer of using coded language to transmit “hidden” (and sexist) messages to scupper her chances of becoming the first female President of the USA. This show has provided us with a superb exposé of how the media intentionally uses language to connote messages other than the literal meaning of words. Also, as Marcus points out, it is as much to do with what is not said (the fact that she served 7 years in the US army) as it is to do with what is said.
